Free weights have more bacteria than a toilet seat

A recent report by FitRated gathered bacteria samples from 27 pieces of equipment which showed there were 362 times more bacteria than on a toilet seat.

The study warns gym goers of the risks exposed to them from harmful bacteria.

Each gym in the study had more than one million germs per square inch.

With an abundance of people touching the pieces of equipment each day the presence of bacteria is not surprising.

The bacteria that was found is linked to causes of pneumonia and septicaemia, and even bugs that are resistant to antibiotics.

Speaking to the Daily Mail Online, FitRated creative team member, Chelsea Freeburn said: “Gym equipment is used by a community of people.

“If not wiped down thoroughly before and after use, bacterial growth can occur.

“Think of it as having handshakes with multiple very sweaty people.”

While free weights had an average of 362 times more germs than a toilet seat the average exercise bike has 39 times more germs than a tray from a school cafeteria.

While a treadmill typically had 74 times more germs than a public bathroom faucet.

All three types of equipment were found to have contain gram-positive cocci – a bacteria that commonly causes skin infections and other illnesses.

How to avoid getting ill from the gym?

  • Take a towel! Wipe down equipment before use and after.

  • Have an induction at the gym you may join, judge the cleanliness of the place. Staff should regularly clean and wipe equipment throughout the day.

  • Having a shower after the gym will wash away harmful bacteria. Even simply washing your hands post-workout to remove some of the danger of contracting an illness.
